Abstract: Based on three self-made diachronic corpora, the thesis is aimed at probing the semantic usage and development of the “shì…de” structure, its judgmental function being the research object. Mainly through quantitative method, the research describes and analyzes the sentence structure’s differences between two historical periods: before and after the introduction of the large amount of translated literature works happened from 1980. The research findings are as follows: 1. The whole number of the structure usage is increasing; 2. The sematic characteristic of the sentence structure is becoming more and more diverse, flexible and complex; 3.The structure’s descriptive and expressive function is increasing; 4. The usage condition of the structure is extending from “must” to “must” + “may”—its sematic domain is becoming broader. To some extent, these tendencies could be contributed to the influence of translated literature works. The most easily observed affects are concerning employing of “new” words, the increasingly usage of verbs and multi-layer structures.
