An Exploration of Non-conventional Ditransitive Clause from the Perspective of Cognition-Generation: Based on Conceptual Integration and Grammatical Metonymy
Abstract：Abstract: Based on conceptual integration and grammatical metonymy, this study addresses the issue of how non-conventional ditransitive clauses are cognitively generated. It is argued that non-conventional ditransitive clauses are generated via conceptual & grammatical integration, and that grammatical metonymy plays a mechanism or triggering role in this process in that its “conceptual substitution” accounts for syntactic non-compositionality and emergent meaning of this type of clause. This constitutes the inherent cognitive motivations for the generation of so-called peripheral clauses, and therefore ultimately illuminates why under-specification is common in linguistic realization.
