Abstract Abstract: Seamus Heaney’s narrative poems are the canonical model that upgrades the ordinary daily life moments into poetry. Based upon multiple-scope of conceptual blending, this article interprets the blending value of the poetic meanings in Heaney’s narratives. Multiple-scope is a complete, dynamic working mechanism of multiple blends, which is composed of network frames, network lines for vital relations, the three cognitive mechanisms and emergent structure. The article reveals that the parallel, reblending patterns together with the recurring pattern in the poems construct network frames, and different vital relations form network lines. Blending value is achieved in the three cognitive processes, i.e., preference of network frames, prominence of network line connection and optimization of blending scale. Multiple-scope provides blending value with governing mechanism, and blending value represents the practical application of multiple-scope. In the interaction of multiple-scope and blending value, the reader comes to an understanding of the nature of Heaney’s unceasing “digging”, namely “narrative upgrading”.
