Abstract:There is Double Chronostopos Structure in Obolomov, with the modern urban as the explicit and the rural countryside the implicit. These two chronostopos are conceivably nested, as well as separate but integrated into each other, implying the dialogue of urban civilization and pastoral ideal. By analyzing this chronostopos, we can touch comparatively concealed and tangled position of the author, Goncharov. Although the novel Obolomov represents the defect of personality organizing by Russian aristocratic manor culture and the parasitism derived from it, the gist of this novel represents the value conflicts between Russian patriarchal culture and the Western industrial culture, the Russian soul and the Germanic soul, Orthodox ethic and Protestant ethic in the modernization process. The novel brings the aggregation, romantic and simplicity in Russian traditional culture and the discreteness, sense and utility in western modern culture to the space of dialogue for text, and represents the doubts of the urban civilization and the demands of pastoral value.
