Abstract：Abstract: Having been influenced by the traditions of Russian literary criticism as well as the social context of China, the perspective and the approach of Gontcharov studies in China have basically aligned with those in Russia, which has made original achievement deficient. In the special time, some scholars had once inappropriately mechanically interpreted Gontcharov’s works. Therefore, the misreading of Gontcharov was unavoidable. This paper aims to diachronically generalize the history of Gontcharov studies in China, to discuss the manifestations and causes of misreading, and to propose that the future study angle of Gontcharov should be changed. It also suggests that researchers should treat Gontcharov’s trilogy as a whole and give new elucidations and thorough explorations of Gontcharov’s literature legacy from the aspects of religion, culture, linguistics, and even the strife between Westerners and Slavophiles.
