Abstract:Abstract: The semantic domain theory in Systemic Functional Grammar posits that projection serves both ideational and interpersonal functions. However, previous studies only focus on the interpersonal function of projection manifested by clauses and comment adjuncts, with less discussion on angles. Based on the parallel corpus of Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansion), the present study finds that angle has its peculiar interpersonal meaning potential. The interpersonal function of angle consists of three aspects: subjective modality, appraisal adjustment and speech inference. These functions are translated in the forms of ideational projection or various types of grammatical metaphors.
