Abstract:Abstract: The diversified matching relations between forms and meanings in language have resulted in many controversies on the complement classification of “V Dao” construction, such as directional, resultative and phase complement. In view of this, drawing on the framework of Talmy (2000)’s event integration theory, this paper analyzes the various kinds of conceptual primitives integration within different types of “V Dao” constructions. The research finds that: ① event integration is not only existed between the conceptual primitives of [motion] and [support relation], but also occurs between [move] and [path]; ② the distribution of “V Dao” constructions in the five event integration types can clarify their definition and classification among the directional, resultative and phase complement. ③ the degree of event integration presents an increasing continuum on “motion event → temporal contouring event → action correlating event → state of change event → realization event”. Therefore we argue that the intrinsic nature of “V Dao” constructions is the variation in verb complement typology from the perspective of event integration. The findings should shed some light on further research of Talmy's event integration theory and the localized researches of “V Dao” constructions.
