Abstract:Abstract: The implementation of the present national development strategies, such as “One Belt One Road”, “China’s Culture Going Abroad” and “Participating Global Governance”, needs more people who are expected to have a good mastery of a foreign language or foreign languages. The education of these people crucially depends on the establishment of a discipline it belongs to, which should fit in with the needs of its development. However, the disciplinary nature of foreign language education in our country has long been neglected, which has presented a major obstacle for China’s foreign language education. Taking this into consideration, this paper proposes that we should establish Foreign Language Education Studies (FLES) as a discipline, and points out that the establishment can ensure the integration of related disciplines and the perfection of the discipline system. The paper also argues that we should emphasize the construction of disciplinary knowledge and the proper handling of the relations among and between the research object, the institutions to undertake the research and the researchers to conduct the research, so as to better train students’ language skills and cultivate their humanistic quality under the guidance of FLES theories.
