Abstract:Abstract: Robert Lowell was a renowned American confessional poet whose writing style underwent marked changes. The most obvious was the change from the conventional and formal style in his early stage of creation to a freer, more colloquial, and straightforward one in his middle and late stages. On the basis of his writing and life experience, this article explores the reason for the change in Lowell’s writing style. This article argues that although Lowell’s writing style had changed radically over the years, some of his poetic ideas remained constant, one of which was Lowell’s belief that a poem is a kind of expression of experiences. The main reason for the change in Lowell’s writing style was his need to express experiences which not only contained personal happenings, feelings, and knowledge, but also revealed the relationships among people, and the relationship between people and their environments.
