Abstract:Abstract: Chinese linguistic studies have gone through the stages of borrowing, digesting and applying and are now gradually merging into the international arena. In recent years, the number of articles published in international linguistic journals is rising steadily. However, linguistic researches in China are still lagging behind the international mainstream and innovations are scarce. Many of the international publications by Chinese scholars are just reviews or attempted revisions based on Chinese language phenomena, lacking substantial theoretical weight or discoveries. The author argues that Chinese linguistic studies “going global” should be the result of natural development rather than publishing for publishing’s sake. In other words, only when the study of the Chinese language has reached a level where it can challenge or change the existing theories or research paradigms can Chinese linguistics make true contributions to general linguistic theories and be an integral part of international research.
