Reception Channels, Translation Strategies and Cultural Preference: Mao Dun’s Translation Selection of Foreign Literature and Construction of Chinese Literature
Abstract:Abstract: Mao Dun, one of the most outstanding representatives of Chinese modern literature, is a writer, literary theorist and at the same time a translator. His translation of foreign literature, which started in 1917, has manifested his broad world literary horizon and hugely enriched the foreign resources for the development of modern literature. His focus on Russian-Soviet literature and literature from small and weak nations manifested his distinctive value for the construction of domestic literature. However, these translation endeavors were carried out by the means of English, the only foreign language he mastered. This strategy on the one hand helped to broaden his global literary horizon and enabled him to translate extensive foreign literary works, but on the other hand left his translation endeavors with marks from the English world, which then exerted influence on how Mao Dun conducted his translation of foreign literature and the cultural effect ensuing.
