Abstract:Abstract: Following the study of identity under the essentialist and constructivist microscope, the study of identity has shifted in favor of a pragmatic lens. However, the current research on pragmatic identity is still in the early stages of theoretical construction and application. As such, by taking into consideration theories in dialogue phenomenology, social identity theory, and social cognition, this paper intends to analyze and deconstruct problems of prior experience, identity resources, and diachronic identity. Accordingly, this paper attempts to extend the pragmatic identity in two dimensions, viz., synchronic identity and diachronic identity, further proposing that these two identities are in a dialectical cycle of mutual dependence and shaping.
