Abstract：Abstract: In the present paper, we overview a variety of approaches to linguistic politeness. Politeness research has become one of the most robustly developing areas – if not the most roboust – in pragmatics. There is perhaps no such a thing as ‘politeness research’ in singular any longer, considering the multidisciplinary character of the field, hence our use of the plural form approaches in the title of the paper. We pursue special interest in Chinese linguistic politeness and its research in Chinese academia, that is this paper has a culturally situated rather than ‘general’ scope, not only because providing a full-fledged overview of approaches to politeness is beyond the boundaries of a single publication, but also because politeness research and its methodologies have already been summarized in various publications. We aim to propose ways in which politeness research – which is currently heavily ‘Anglo’ in scope – can be ‘reinterpreted’ and efficiently adopted by Chinese academia.
