Abstract reading pictophonetic characters is insufficient. With the purpose of proving the existence of phonological loop, this study confirms the cognitive processing model of "phonetic symbols" in the reading process of pictophonetic characters, through experiments implemented among Japanese high-school students. Result of the study shows that in visual cognitive processing, cognition of visual symbols is prioritized over that of pictographic symbols. The result proves the vital role played by phonetic symbols in the reading process of pictophonetic characters, providing empirical proof to visual cognition research of Chinese characters while serving as the theoretical basis of the memory research of Japanese pictophonetic characters.
