    The Routledge Handbook of Multimodal Analysis is a comprehensive book which introduces multimodal analysis on a wide range of theoretical and methodological issues.It covers many fields beyond language and detailed multimodal analysis case studies are also included.The articles included here mainly belong to the studies in the approaches of social semiotic and systemic functional grammar.Recently,the multimodal studies in different approaches and from various fields are developing prosperously.These extend the scope of linguistics,promote a trend of interdisciplinary methodology.

    Tang poetry translation practice and its corresponding research have experienced a great boom in recent years, which is not only of great reference value for translation practice and translation theory construction for Chinese classical poetry, but also of vital significance for the Chinese culture to go global. However, when did the translation of Tang poetry and related translation studies come into being and develop in the West? Who are the major western scholars? And what are their major contributions? This paper is intended to briefly outline and summarize the above-mentioned topics.

    The academic philosophy of Stoic is composed of three parts: logic, ethics and physics. The logical part is commonly divided into two "sciences", namely rhetoric and dialectic. Rhetoric deals with the organization and construction of arguments for political, forensic and panegyric speeches, while dialectic is relevant to epistemology, grammar and stylistics. Therefore, the study of language possesses a very important position in Stoic theory. Their arguments on language are also quite rich. The paper traces back to the history of Stoic, explores the school' s philosophy of language and conducts a research on its main achievements in linguistic studies.

    As a global language, English has borrowed a lot of words from other languages in its world-wide use. Chinese didn't contribute many loanwords to English in previous centuries. Based on a case study of the word gaokao, this paper proposes that the concept of loanword is dynamic in nature. With the booming of Chinese economy and culture, more and more Chinese words will be absorbed by English through phases like temporary loanwords, developmental loanwords and permanent loanwords. From the perspective of world English, Chinese loanwords will increase in number and will be recognized mainly through transliteration.

    At the early stage of English education in China, Tales from Shakespeare was listed as the textbook or the reading material in the church school, junior and senior high school and the social school. Among all these summary books of Shakespeare, some focus on Chinese notes for English learning, including the one by Chares Lamb and Mary Lamb and the notes for Shakespeare' s whole scripts; some are the Chinese version of Tales from Shakespeare for literature reading. These books as the bestsellers then, have contributed a lot to English teaching and learning. They also helped the learners to understand the Shakespearean plays and learn the authentic English, thus playing an important role in Chinese history of English education.

    Facing the challenge posed by globalization to non-English speaking countries, it is of great significance to adopt the perspective of English as a lingua franca in studying the development trend of English teaching. With a review on pedagogical research in ELF, the author shows that compared with traditional EFL model in pedagogy, ELF teaching model focuses more on intelligibility in communication, adaptability in pragmatic strategies and an awareness of multicultural setting in global lingua franca, which will lend some inspiration to the innovation of English teaching in China. It is believed that English teaching should aim at cultivating students' language ability as well as enhancing their overall quality as world citizens. More consideration should be given to other English varieties than standard British or American English though it still works as the core of English. Meanwhile, content-and- English-integrated learning can be adopted in classroom teaching, and in language assessment, communication competence should be valued as well as the form of the language.

    批评隐喻分析视角下的隐喻是话语者有意识的话语选择,可以实现社会关系和社会身份的构建。本文以联合国教科文组织现任总干事的50篇英语演讲为语料,分析隐喻的选择如何实现国际机构的身份构建。结果表明:语料中的隐喻有助于塑造一个有目标、有策略、有效率、全身心投入人类事业的国际组织形象,实现国际机构存在的合理化和合法化。

    The study focuses on the effect of a CBI-guided curriculum reform for English specialty in a Chinese tertiary institution.A quasi-experiment was conducted with the experimental group following the CLI(Content and Language Integrated) curriculum and the conventional LSO(language skills-oriented) curriculum respectively.A pre-test and a post-test were organized to collect data.Data analysis yielded the following findings.Firstly, the mean of the experimental group composed of the first-and secondary-rating students was significantly lower than that of the control group of the first-rating students in the pre-test,but it became higher than the control group in the post-test.Secondly, me mean of me first-rating students in the experimental group was lower than that of the first-rating students in the control group, but it became significantly higher than the first-rating students in the control group.Thirdly,the standard deviations of the experimental group also indicated more positive changes.The positive changes of me experimental group reflected the advantages of the CLI curriculum in the teaching of the English language and the knowledge of society,culture,literature and linguistics concerning the English-speaking countries.The findings could be enlightening for the change of philosophy for English major education and the future curriculum reform for English majors in Chinese tertiary institutions.

    本文从概括我国大学生的英语自主学习能力现状入手,分析了大学生英语自主学习能力普遍较低及其自主学习能力并不是随着年级的增高而提高的原因,对如何在大学英语教学中有效地培养学生的自主学习能力提出了具体建议:加强学习策略培训、创设自主课堂、引导学生养成课外合作学习习惯、针对不同水平学习者探讨不同的自主学习能力培养方案、教材体现"学习者选择"理念。文章最后强调,加强大学英语教师队伍的建设与发展是培养大学生英语自主学习能力的前提和保障。

    As information transmitters, interpreters are supposed to have on-the-spot coping abilities in interpretation and the ability to overcome different kinds of difficulties in linguistic and non- linguistic emergencies in order to get the communicative activity successfully accomplished. Through examples, this paper analyses coping strategies in linguistic emergencies and in non-linguistic emergencies dealing with cultural differences, inappropriate ways of expression, abusive words and so on. Finally, strategies on cultivating coping abilities are recommended, including cultivating critical thinking ability, sufficient preparation before interpretation, and cultivating psychological and reactive abilities, etc.

    Since it came into being in 1983,Task-Based Language Teaching(TBLT) has been widely adopted in the world.Researches of TBLT in Asian context covered three stages:1980s' arising and importing,1990s' challenges and problems and 21st century's prospects.With the purpose of effectively popularizing TBLT in domestic primary and secondary schools,this review attempts to analyze and sort out the research findings of TBLT at home and abroad.

    Mother-tongue competence is the "glass-ceiling" over the study of foreign languages. In other words, a learner' s foreign language ability cannot generally surpass his mother-tongue capacity, as the latter has basically decided his way of thinking and his aesthetic view. The paper also makes some comments on certain frequently cited viewpoints such as "do not lose at the starting line" or "it is the earlier the better for children to start learning a foreign language" .

    本文以207名非英语专业大学生为研究对象,使用探索性因子分析和结构方程模型等方法,研究歧义容忍度的分类以及在学习策略的中介作用下,歧义容忍度对英语水平的影响。结果表明,大学生英语学习歧义容忍度可以划分为输入歧义容忍度和输出歧义容忍度;输入歧义容忍度对英语水平具有直接的正向影响,影响程度接近显著;输出歧义容忍度对英语水平具有直接的反向影响,但影响强度不显著。另外,通过学习策略的中介作用,输入歧义容忍度对英语水平产生较大的间接正向影响,输出歧义容忍度则对其产生一定的间接反向影响,但强度较小。

    With the development of corpus linguistics and the establishment of different kinds of corpus, a corpus-based behavioral profile approach has been seen as a very scientific and efficient method in language research and teaching. Based on COCA corpus, this paper tries to discuss how to study near-synonymous verbs with “finish”“complete” and “accomplish”as examples. Based on the statistics provided by COCA corpus, this paper studies the differences among the three synonymous verbs, namely “finish”,“complete” and “accomplish” from the perspectives of frequency, stylistics, collocation and semantic prosody. The following questions will be answered in this paper: Are the three verbs interchangeable? If they are, when can they interchange? The purpose of this study is that English learners can learn the near-synonyms better through corpus-based means.

    English proverbs in the form of sentences with inanimate subjects belong to a small category of proverbs. Data from a case study of 5 books and dictionaries on English proverbs show that the size of this category is about 12% to 20% of the total and that its distribution is closely related to the themes of proverbs. This category of English proverbs has three characteristics: 1) brief and concise in form, and attractive in rhythm and rhyme; 2) euphemistic and objective in meaning, and rich in implication; 3) vivid in image and close in association. Literal translation of this categart should be based on its transoarencv, and the faithfulness to the imolication.

    After analyzing the image of the monster in Frankenstein by way of the opposites viewpoints in Humanism and Posthumanism, this study has found out that the monster was situated in the three paradoxes of rationalism and embodied cognition, being born and being made as well as life and death. And this study has reached the conclusion that the monster portrayed by Mary Shelley could serve as the foil to Frankenstein and reveal the problems concerning human essence.
