Abstract:Modern genetic research has uncovered the existence of racial mixing, and this existence is further shown by Morrison in an allegorical way in her last published novel God Help the Child. By using the 2010 U.S. census data for comparison, this study attempts to demonstrate that the mention in Morrison’s novel that “20% of white Americans of African have Black blood running in their veins” is a hidden truth. Through her emphasis that many white people have “hidden African ancestry”, Morrison aims to confirm the brutal fact that race is socially constructed. The dominant gene of each race might be different, but the recessive gene is all the same. It means everyone, black or white, deserves salvation. This idea originates from the Holy Bible and it also simultaneously highlights the fact that the black gene is as noble as the white gene.
