Abstract:The current study sampled 182 English teachers from 118 universities/colleges in mainland China and employed a questionnaire to investigate their motivations to participate in the “Visiting Scholar Program (VSP)”. The exploratory factor analysis yielded seven types of motivational factors, which were ranked from top to bottom as “academic situation”, “intrinsic interest”, “social responsibility”, “academic circle construction”, “academic achievements pursuit” , “burn-out escaping”, and “need for future career competition”. Follow-up interviews on 12 of them further revealed the features of teachers’ motivations. Based on the research findings, it finally proposed some suggestions that universities should support teachers’ further education; and the universities running VSP should improve the quality of VSP to enhance teachers’ multiple motivations of participating in VSP.
