Abstract:Abstract:This article illustrates and discusses two dilemmas faced by Chinese applied linguists in academic globalization. The first difficulty is whether research priority should focus on local problems or international problems and the second one is whether Chinese or English should be the preferred language for academic publication. The discussion is made with my own personal experience of research on applied linguistics for several decades. Finally, two suggestions are put forward for resolving the two dilemmas: 1) adopting a policy of “quality first” and of “classified excellence” for academic evaluation; 2) adopting an incentive policy for bilingual publication.
