Abstract:Abstract: With a contrastive study on the poetry of Du Fu translated by Rewi Alley and by Stephen Owen, this article tries to analyze the translator’s construction of cultural identity based on the translator’s voice and relevant paratexts, so as to gain an insight into their interrelationship.It is found that the translator’s voice is clearly revealed in their target texts. Alley tends to reach a resonance by arousing the reader’s strong emotions, since he has developed an identity to Chinese culture. In contrast, with a configuration of multiple cultural identities, Owen is inclined to stay loyal to the scenario in the source text. This study highlights the importance of the translator’s cultural identity on exploring his intervention in translation.
