Abstract：Abstract: Lilliput Library Series (or The Series of Tonghua) published by The Commercial Press during 1908 and 1923 is the earliest large-scale importation of foreign children’s literature into modern China through translation. Of the 102 titles included in the series, those trans-edited by Sun Yuxiu not only account for the largest number, but they are also most typical ones. This paper attempts to study Sun Yuxiu’s behavior of trans-editing through an investigation of the representative works he trans-edited for Lilliput Library Series. It is found that on the one hand, Sun’s translations indicate the translator’s consideration for the target young readers, which distinguished his texts from other translated literature published in the early 20th century China, but on the other hand, Sun’s translations, bursting with moral messages and deeply rooted in the adult-oriented ideology of literature which privileged in the feudal culture of ancient China, are different from the child-oriented literature that emerged in the May-Fourth Period.
