Abstract Abstract: Against the current background of application-oriented transition of local universities, it is urgent for some instructors engaged in teaching EGP to change themselves into ESP instructors. This article probes into the EGP-to-ESP transition from the perspectives of the role of ESP instructors, the structure of their knowledge and their subject-based knowledge. In order to find out the attitudes of EGP instructors toward reform directions of college English teaching, roles of ESP instructors and difficulties of ESP teaching, three representative local universities have been surveyed in this study. The results indicate that most of EGP instructors have realized the importance and urgency of ESP teaching, and they are mentally prepared for it. The article has, in light of the present situations of local universities and problems shown in the survey, discussed the models of the curriculum design and professional self-development for instructors’role change from EGP to ESP.The article concludes that EGP instructors can change themselves into ESP ones through their professional self-development.
