Abstract Abstract: Previous analyses of verbal fusion into the WAY Construction based on the aspectual constraints are found inadequate in laying down a comprehensive restriction to verb types. This paper, based on the classification of verbs and corresponding construction meanings, first proposes an alternative view of construction meaning—goal and possessum sense, the sense with the conventional means sense and manner sense, co-extensively confirms that way construction can be categorized into the resultative construction. Secondly, based on the property of way construction integrated with motion-manner subevent and motion-result subevent, applying Levin & Rappaport’s complementary distribution of manner and result as a theoretical framework, the paper reinterprets that the verbal fusion mechanism, in addition to the aspectual constraints, should fulfill the fundamental requirement of motion-manner sense so as to match with the motion-result sense of the construction. In addition, concerning the different profiles of motion manner represented by different verb types, the paper argues that incidental activity verbs are proved to be more representative rather than marginal of the way construction verb types as they profile the motion manner with finer representation.
