How to construct individualized voice is a key problem to be solved in teaching and learning of English writing at the university level. To address this critical issue, the present paper proposes a 3D dynamic model with three dimensions of language, thought and socio-culture from the perspective of individualized voice’s features and constraining factors. The proposed model integrates and reflects the latest research findings on voice in writing both home and abroad. The model not only clearly shows that the cross-interaction among language, thought and socio-culture influences and constrains the construction of individualized voice, but also distinctively reveals the optimal conditions for constructing the individualized voice from the synergy of language and thought, language and socio-culture, thought and socio-culture. In other words, the construction of individualized voice is inseparable from an author’s narratives, discourse organization and intended meanings. Based on this model, the authors of the study further put forward teaching methods and techniques to construct individualized voice with an emphasis on enhancing students’discourse competence in terms of language, thought and socio-culture. The findings from this study provide new insights into the study, teaching, and learning of individualized voice in English writing.
