This paper reviews the book Symmetry, Shared Labels and Movement in Syntax written by Andreas Bl*mel. How to label the syntactic object created by Merge, which in turn, enables the syntactic object accessible by the interface, is the core of Labeling Algorithm proposed by Chomsky. With Minimal Search, this book, by revisiting the phenomena such as successive cyclic A’-movement, Criterial Freezing and Across-the-Board Movement, addresses (i) how to break the symmetry in syntax; (ii) how to label the syntactic object by shared prominent feature; (iii) the effects of the Labeling Algorithm. In that sense, it is an exploration and application of Chomsky’s Labeling Algorithm. Furthermore, it argues that the phenomena mentioned above can be attributed to the interplay of interface properties and efficient computation, which also makes it a demonstration of how the Third Factor principle works in Minimalist syntax.
