Abstract: On the basis of the semantic analysis of chi, this paper accounts for the cognitive foundations of the collocations between chi and its atypical objects. It is argued that (1) the diversified meanings of chi may be classified into four kinds by way of extensions of the INCLUSION schema, that is, chi1, chi2, chi3, and chi4, which are interrelated and form a semantic network in terms of conceptual metonymies and metaphors; (2) the construction “chi +NP” may be categorized into four kinds which are linked through schema abstraction, elaboration and extension; and (3) the construction “chi +NP” results from foregrounding two elements of an event frame and putting other elements in the background, which involves several kinds of metonymies and metaphors, namely consecutive metonymies, parallel metonymies, alternating metaphtonymies and consecutive metaphtonymies.
