Abstract:Abstract: The Production-oriented Approach (POA) advocates the concept of“input-output integration”, and can effectively guide the adaption of foreign language teaching materials. The textbook for junior level Sinhalese majors in the comprehensive language course currently in use has manifested defects in its “text-centeredness”, “input-output separation”, “lack of communication-oriented production task”, etc. Based on POA, this article reports the author’s initial efforts in solving problems hereinbefore by adapting a lesson in the above-mentioned textbook, with a focus on the principles of progression in the design and planning steps of such tasks. It also discusses the reflections the author has had over the task design and the implications it may bring to the less-commonly taught languages instruction for beginners.
