Abstract:The main plot of William Morris’s poem “The Lovers of Gudrun” is based on the medieval Scandinavian saga Laxdaela Saga. Morris fully considered the interests of Victorian readers and the cultural atmosphere at that time, and adopted some appropriate adaptation strategies while rewriting. He absorbed and inherited some themes and topics of the original work, including overseas colonization, religious reform and handicrafts, which all had important enlightening significance to British society of his time. Morris also screened and changed some themes and aspects of the original work, as evidenced by his revised image of the heroine Gudrun based largely on the moral values for women in the Victorian period.
