Abstract:Diet plays an important role in Conrad’s works, and this is also true in his colonial fictions. Conrad’s dietary writing in his colonial fictions not only reflects the diverse dietaries and cultural habits of different races and nations, but also serves as an important means to construct Englishness. Through his dietary writing, Conrad created the images of British citizens embodying the ideal qualities on behalf of Englishness in his mind, namely being noble and benevolent saviors selflessly helping those in hunger, self-disciplined and conscientious citizens taking food in moderation, decent and elegant English gentlemen heading dietary etiquettes. Conrad’s writing on Englishness is the product of his time, but bears his own unique imprint, too. It reflects Conrad’s worries and hopes for the future of his country.
