Abstract:This article raises advocacy of educational linguistics in China. Rectifying the time-honored misconceptions of applied linguistics, educational linguistics focuses on socially and culturally relevant issues or phenomena related to language in education. Rather than clinging onto a theory of pure linguistics, it takes theoretical input from diverse fields about language. The author then proposes six fields for urgent attention in Chinese social and cultural context. Finally, the author calls for a need to respect the contributions of educational linguistics as a spiritual home for teachers in L2/FL language education in China.
