Abstract:Abstract: The article investigates the twenty-one English translations from Sanguo yanyi during the period of late Qing and early Republic of China. The study explores the identities of the translators, their translation purposes and objects, as well as the functions of the translations from social, historical and cultural perspectives, and finds that the translations lay great store by the interest of the story to the neglect of its literariness. Translations largely aim to meet certain practical demand and serve as reading material, language learning material or research object.
