Abstract:Abstract: The Cardiff Grammar is an important model of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It is generally believed that the contributions of the Cardiff Grammar to SFL lie mainly in its extensive studies on functional syntax, which only fills the gap of systemic functional description at the level of form. However, this paper claims that the Cardiff Grammar is not simply a minor amendment to Halliday’s model, but has constructed a self-contained, holistic model of language and its use, which makes significant contributions to SFL in many other aspects. Semantically, the systems of transitivity, mood, theme and so on have been semanticized and more delicately described, and Halliday’s metafunctions have been expanded and further specified. Cognitively, the grammar has been blended into a cognitive model of interacting mind, and the individual’s cognitive model and the social cultural model have been properly integrated. With regard to appliability, a computer model of natural language generation has been advanced, and the full guidelines and re-expression tests for text analysis have been offered.
