Abstract:Abstract: This review aims to describe the landscape of research on online foreign language teaching and learning at home and abroad. We have found that theoretical underpinnings of this field have evolved from behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism to social constructivism, and teaching approaches have changed with development of technology. Correspondingly, teaching practices put greater emphasis on student autonomy and blur the boundaries between formal and informal learning. Four concepts have emerged from this bulk of research: interaction and collaboration, learner engagement, learner competence(s), and teachers’ role and teacher literacy. Empirical studies on this topic have adopted increasingly diverge and new approaches and methods. We conclude this paper with a discussion of future research directions.
