Abstract:Abstract: Object implicit, i.e., a transitive verb with no object in a sentence, is a special type of verb-object constructions, which is closely related to human experiences and emotions, social and cultural factors. Based on the previous study, I argue that it is cognitive and pragmatic factors that bring about the object implicit, i.e. constructional form-meaning pairs and coercion factors make the object implicit a gestalt, and pragmatic factors such as politeness strategy, economic principle and educational function also shape the constructions themselves and their entrenchments in various ways. Therefore, it is helpful to understand the cognitive mechanism of such phenomena and also beneficial to deepen the study of verb-object constructions from the perspective of the interaction between cognitive linguistics and pragmatics.
