Abstract:Abstract:Based on the framework of Foreign Language Education Studies, this research conducted a questionnaire survey with 214 front-line foreign language teachers who came from 6 language backgrounds, to systematically explore the “real problems” in the practice of foreign language teaching in Chinese higher education. This research confirmed 63 “real problems” which have a great impact on the effectiveness of foreign language teaching. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that these “real problems” can be categorized into 5 salient types, which are insufficient language application, insufficient foreign language phonetic training, deviations in understanding foreign language teaching concepts and methods, "weak foundation", "superficiality" and "low standards" in imparting skills and knowledge, and the ineffectiveness of the application and evaluation of teaching models in learning promotion. Based on the survey results, this study proposed related research issues that need to be explored urgently by the foreign language teaching community.
